In December, French students took part in the UNM French essay-writing contest for New Mexico high school students.
Students in French IV or AP French V were tasked with writing on the following topic: “Quel symbole représente bien la France? Pourquoi?” or “What symbol best represents France for you? Why?” Students in French II and III were asked to write on the following topic: “Qu’est-ce que la Tour Eiffel représente pour toi?” or “What does the Eiffel tower represent for you? Why?”
The essays were judged on proper French grammar and syntax, as well as intellectual and creative content. Participants were not allowed to seek help from their teachers for this contest.
Each of the finalists received $25 and the opportunity to move up to the next round. The students have been invited to the UNM World Language Expo on March 3, where they will be recognized and have the opportunity to participate in oral interviews with the possibility of earning additional recognition.
